Roche Brain Shuttle

The blood-brain barrier serves as a gatekeeper along all capillaries, restricting the flow of larger molecules from the blood stream into the brain tissue. This selective filtration ensures the delivery of essential nutrients to the brain while keeping out harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, this interface also bars entry of potentially life-saving antibodies, which could be used to treat neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease. To that end, Roche has engineered a "brain shuttle" that allows antibodies to bind to protein receptors along the blood barrier, granting passageway of therapeutic molecules to the brain.

Roche commissioned the award-winning XVIVO to deliver a 3D animation to better illustration this biotechnology. I served as lead animator and compositor.
